Since 1993, humans have practiced three specific traditions during the Halloween season:
1. They go to the pumpkin patch, where they bob for apples, eat cheap kettle corn, and buy pumpkins to carve.
2. They eat chili and cornbread on Halloween night, only to follow such a rich and filling dinner by consuming a large sum of Reese's peanut butter cups, accepting the food coma that will dawdle from that night, through the remainder of the holidays.
3. They will watch Max, Disney's first virgin, light the black flame candle, bringing the Sanderson sisters back from the dead, with the purpose to inflict revenge upon the town Salem by sucking the youth out of it's children, insuring the witch's everlasting immortality.
A timeless classic, rooted in it's charm, goofy characters, and it's reflection on the importance of friendship, Hocus Pocus remains one of the classic Halloween films we have today.
So, the question we are all thinking... "Why would you EVER want to remake such a classic!?"
Well, like I have preached on many other blogs before, my belief on remakes is such: Remake ANYTHING and EVERYTHING! Why? Well, if you get a well done remake (Oceans 11, The Departed, The Karate Kid), then we receive a new, fun interpretation of a classic film! If the remake sucks? So what! We still have the original! It's not going six feet in the ground, followed by Costco sandwich platters and heartwarming stories as to how we will remember them. Remakes can be fun/rewarding; and a film like Hocus Pocus is one that I think should consider revisiting.
So, with that being considered, he is my dream casting for a remake of the 1993 classic, Hocus Pocus:
Winifred Sanerson- Sandra Bullock
Mary Sanderson- Aidy Bryant
Sarah Sanderson- Amy Adams
Max- Dylan O'Brien
Allison- Hailee Steinfeld
Jay/Ice- Dave Franco/Adam Devine
Mom/Dad- Ty Burell/Judy Greer
Satan/wife- Larry David/Diane Keaton
Billy- Chris Hemsworth
Thackery Binx- Ansel Elgort
Fake cop (cameo)- Vince Vaughn
Bus Driver (cameo)- Luke Wilson
Monster Band- D.N.C.E.
Nostalgia, while at times powerful, can create smokescreens when it comes to the quality of a film. What still looks great to us, may look dated, silly, and unnecessary to another generation. In principal, this film is still a lot of fun, with plenty of entertaining content to still hold up to today's overall holiday traditions. However, we are all lying if we don't think a remake of this Halloween classic could actually work.
Mind you, the original film came out in the summer! THE SUMMER! We are due for a great Halloween film, that actually comes out DURING Halloween. If anything, a story like this deserves a pair of fresh eyes, from both the standpoint of a viewer, and a filmmaker.
I maintain this cast, full of talented actors/actresses/comedians, as my lead-off hitter for this long overdue remake.
What do you guys think?
Happy Halloween!
