Relatives You Will Encounter Over The Holidays

We all have that one relative...

Relatives You Will Encounter Over The Holidays
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

As the holidays roll around, it is time to start preparing ourselves for more than just the extra pounds we're bound to put on because of all the yummy food, and that is relatives. Thanksgiving and Christmas, or whatever your family celebrates, marks the time for the whole family tree to get together under one roof. This can be chaos for most families but often ends with laughter and plenty of good memories. Whether it's your mom's side, or your dad's side getting together this season, I can assure that you will have to deal the types of relatives listed below.

1. Crazy uncle

We all have that one relative who doesn't know when his jokes have gone too far. For me it's my Uncle. He's always cracking jokes and being more of a nuisance than the kids. But you have to admit, family holidays wouldn't be the same without him.

2. Grandfather who is always sleeping

You know, the one who will fall asleep mid-conversation so you have to call his name over and over again until he suddenly wakes up and says, "Oh, did I fall asleep?" He sits in his recliner for the majority of the day, and you will most likely find him asleep unless someone is occupying him with a story, but you're still not guaranteed he will stay awake.

3. Aunt who asks too many questions

Or maybe it's another relative, but no matter who it is they ask the same questions at every family gathering. They try to get your whole life story out of you by interviewing you with a series of questions that are more interrogating than a crime investigation. What is your major? What do you want to do with it? Have you been looking for internships? How about a boyfriend/girlfriend? Do you think you'll be getting married anytime soon? The questions go on and on until you're finally saved by the blessing.

4. Great aunt who can't get over how much you've grown

This relative is probably the least looked forward to seeing each year. They immediately embrace you in a huge hug and step back to stare you down saying, "Wow, I can't believe how big you've gotten!" And you just awkwardly stand there while they are in awe over your existence.

5. Random relative

In the midst of the greetings, you look across the room to see someone in the corner who you've never seen before but are related to. You tap your dad to whisper, Who is that? It's your second cousin twice removed who somehow got invited to the family reunion.

6. Perfect cousin

Just when you think you've got your own life figured out, you walk into the family room where your cousin is telling the whole family of all their accomplishments and life goals. They seem to be good at everything, including impressing the whole family.

7. "Get all you can eat" grandma

In my family, it's my grandma that does most of the cooking for the holidays so she is always the one encouraging everyone to eat. She constantly is walking around asking everyone if they've had enough and if they want dessert. We can blame them for putting us in a food coma after having three servings and dessert.

No matter how crazy our families can be, when it's time to come together to celebrate the holidays, we are thankful to call them our family.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
