The conservative right has a wonderful way of selling their policies to us in ways that can make us almost jump for joy for incredibly negative things. The "pro-life" movement and Citizens United are two things that are infringements upon our rights as Americans that sound incredibly positive! A huge example of their more than exceptional marketing skills has to be their support of the "right to work" laws. Right to work basically means non-union workers are guaranteed the same wages and liberties as that of Union laborers. Now that sounds all well and good, until you understand the ramifications of those laws. Essentially it renders the unions powerless. Why would you pay union dues when I can do the same job for the same rate and benefits without those pesky dues? WELL, here is the deal: those dues pay for the lobbyists and delegates of the union to have a presence on capitol hill and the state halls; those agents and delegates debate the contracts of their represented workers cementing their rights, wages, benefits, brakes and safety regulations. By guaranteeing non-union workers the same benefits, they render the union powerless. This leaves no protective barriers between the workers and industry, meaning businesses will slowly cut wages and slash benefits.
Now, I'm not accusing the conservative right of trying to destroy the middle class, strip away all workers' rights and return us to the coal town mentality of the early 20th century. They say it is to create opportunity and draw jobs back from China, but the fact of the matter is that the companies who lobby for this are guilty of horrible injustices in places like China. We are all of the atrocities that are committed there, and I do not think we want that for the American worker, but they do. Maybe this is my working class New Jerseyan seeping out but I cannot help it, we need to be aware of the destruction of the middle class now more than ever. With the recently sworn in president, who is the stereotype of a middle class hating billionaire hell-bent on screwing over the working man, we need to be diligent and not allow such policies to be signed into effect so our economy and way of life are protected.
