The Quiet Introvert

Daily life struggles of a quiet introvert like me.

Let me get one thing straight… Introverts are people who prefer to be indoors, in the comfort of their own privacy. Nowhere in that sentence did I say that introverts are shy. Because truth be told, that is not exactly true. I’ve met so many introverts that love to talk and talk, and have no problem making new friends if they happen to be social butterflies. They might just simply like to spend more time inside by themselves. On the other hand, if you’re like me, not only do you like to spend time inside, but because of how big of introverts we happen to be, it has shaped our personalities to be more of quiet, reserved persons.

So here’s the deal with timid introverts out there:

  • You obviously favor staying indoors. Being indoors means not having to get all dressed up and not having to make an effort. It means being able to stay in a large T-shirt, sweatpants, eat all day, and watch as much TV as you want (unless your mom tells you to get your ass up and start being productive). But seriously, it’s the dream.

  • It may seem like you’re antisocial and hate the whole world, but you know you just can’t help but feel most comfortable in the safety of your own room. Also, you’re just socially awkward and can’t talk to anyone for more than five minutes because you run out of things to say…

  • You are usually the first one to want to leave any social event. Even if you are having a great time… it really sucks and it makes you look like a Debbie Downer.
  • There will always be people who ask you why you are so quiet. Internally, you sigh. Externally, you explain that it takes time for you to open up.

  • In all honesty, sometimes you really do want to make an effort to go out more and take step by step out of that comfort zone...
But when you do start to make an effort, you remember how much you love your room more than socializing.

In the end, we just ask that everyone else, please don't be offended if we ever decide to stay in another night... It's nothing against you personally--we just always happen to enjoy our own privacy better.

Sincerely,

The Quiet Introverts

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
