The Pros and Cons of Student Teaching
Bonneville Joint School District 93

Is Student Teaching Your Calling?I am currently a student teacher.  Here are the good and bad things about this choice as a life path. Currently a student teacher, I have experienced all the pros and cons that surround the major. Here is a list of all the positive and negative aspects that student teachers will experience in their last semester of college.
Pro: Snow Days!!! While student teaching, student teachers are required to follow their school district’s schedules, meaning that if the students have a cancelation the student teachers will also have one. Getting to relive your childhood with snow days is awesome! There is nothing like waking up in the morning and finding out that you can go back sleep because you have a snow day. (especially when your roommates enrolled in normal PSU classes don’t have one)
Con: No Spring Break: During student teaching, as I have previously stated, you are required to follow your school district’s schedule, which means if your school does not have a spring break (most do not) then you do not have a spring break. Make the most of your junior spring break since it will technically be your last one!
Pro: No Finals: Once student teaching starts, there are several different ways that you are evaluated throughout your time in the classroom, but you will not have a final exam by the end of the 15 credit course. No more all-nighters, late night study binges or cramming material for you!  Con: Wake Up Time: Depending on how far away your school district is from your home or the time that your school starts, your wake up time each morning will approximately be between 5 am-6 am. For those who are already early risers, this will be no problem, but for many people this is a difficult adjustment to make. My best advice: invest in a good coffee maker prior to the start of your student teaching experience.
Pro: Real World Experience: Through student teaching you get a ton of real world classroom experience. During this last semester in college, you are able to get an idea of how you will make a seamless transition into your own future classroom. This knowledge is extremely valuable to your future career as an educator.  Con: Business Casual Attire: Everyday before you go into the school, you must make sure that you look your very best. Business casual is a must for everyday attire in the classroom, which means no more sweatpants to class.
Pro: Working with Children: Overall, the best part of student teaching and teaching in general is getting the opportunity to work with children. There is so much that we can learn from the younger generations and what they produce through their class assignments and discussions. It is so inspiring to be able to watch children grow and learn from all the hard work you put into your lessons. Also, kids are hilarious and their humor makes everything better.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
