Almost every day in between my afternoon classes, I walk back to my apartment to eat lunch. I wander up the stairs to cook (microwave) something for myself, and typically encounter one of my roommates who has a similar schedule to me. She always looks incredibly put together, wearing nice shorts or jeans and a cute top, and often even a dress and Kendra Scott necklace. I, on the other hand, show up to class almost every day wearing shorts and an oversized t-shirt. I always feel okay about it until I encounter my roommate looking many levels of put together better than me. As I end up saying to her almost every day, "Oh, you look so cute and I look like this," I have decided to weigh the pros and cons of looking nice for class.
PROS:
- You could say that it's important to always look your best, because you never know who you might run into. It's always possible that you could see that one girl you can't stand, or the guy you used to like who stopped talking to you for reasons you've never been able to quite figure out.
- Your professors are likely to take you more seriously if you consistently show up to their class looking presentable.
- People may actually compliment you on your look, which can certainly brighten your day.
- It's good practice for when you enter the real world. XL Comfort Colors t-shirts are not exactly acceptable attire once you graduate.
- You just feel better about yourself when you know you look great and your outfit is on point.
CONS:
- Looking nice for class takes up time that could be spent sleeping, studying, or watching Netflix.
- Sitting in class all day wearing a nice outfit is not nearly as comfortable as wearing clothes that could easily double as pajamas.
- You can actually get to class significantly faster if you're wearing tennis shoes. Fact.
- The general effort it takes to put together an outfit and look presentable doesn't feel worth it just to walk across campus and sit in class with a bunch of people you're not trying to impress for a few hours.
- You run the risk of looking like you're trying too hard.
Essentially, I've come to the conclusion that the decision to dress nicely and look presentable for class is dependent on how important all of these factors are to you. I know I will keep meeting my roommate in our kitchen and jealously complimenting how she manages to look consistently put together almost every day. However, I'm going to continue wearing my big t-shirts and shorts, because now that I'm a senior, I can fully appreciate the fact that my time to be able to freely dress like this is growing short.
