The Process Of Getting A Job

It's a lot of waiting and a lot of stress.

The Process Of Getting A Job

College is the time to begin your career through internships and making connections. It’s also a time for part-time jobs that you will never use in your career, like “burrito artist” or “cultured cleaner.” These part-time jobs aren’t always the best, and sometimes we decide to quit them. If you are thinking about quitting your job, here are the steps will follow. If you’ve already quit your job in the past, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

1. Quit your old job.

For whatever reason, you quit your job. You may hate it. You may not have time for it. You may love you work but hate your boss. Welcome to the unemployed world!

2. Spend all your money.

Sure, you may not have a job, but you still have one more paycheck coming! You can afford a $15 burrito, no problem! Maybe you’ll have a $10 salad too. Oh girl look at those $100 leggings. You can afford those.

3. Bask in the freedom.

You don’t have to get up at 6 a.m. to go to work? Heck yeah, you’ll go out with your crazy friend on a Tuesday night!

4. Run out of money.

The hardest moment up to this point in your life will be asking your parents for money. “Mom I have $2 in my checking account and $0.75 in savings. Don’t ask me what happened. Just send the money.”

5. Update your resume.

“Implement emotional and social intelligence through a structured curriculum,” sounds so much better than, “Put kids in time out when they wouldn’t stop screaming.” Let’s go with that. I have talents, please hire me!

6. Apply to jobs.

You force yourself to get out there, even though it’s terrifying. What if no one wants you? You contemplate moving back in with your parents for the rest of your life.

7. Wait patiently.

It may seem like months. It may be actual weeks. Why won't they call you or email you? Come on people, I’m living off Ramen noodles!

8. Preparing for the interview.

By the graces of God, someone decided you looked decent on paper. You mark the date in your calendar and each day closer comes with more and more anxiety. You frantically Google “interview questions” the hour before to prepare yourself.

9. The interview.

OK, here we go. They ask you questions that pertain to your strengths. They ask about your your past jobs. The whole time you’re wondering if you have something in your teeth. This lady seems so nice, but what if she’s just pretending to like you?

10. Wait some more.

If you’re lucky, someone will hire you after an interview. If not, please repeat steps 4-9.

11. The call.

“Hi there, we would like to bring you on the team!” Yes, bring me on the team! I'm so poor I'll be on anyone's team!

12. Training.

This is so much information your head is spinning. How will you ever do this? Why did you apply to do this?

13. First paycheck.

Oh right, this is why you decided to do this. I have missed you so dearly, Mr. Money. I will never abuse you again. “Drinks are one me tonight, ladies!”

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
