Small town = better college experience

For many college freshmen, starting college means moving to a new city that's foreign to the one they've known for their whole life. For me, that meant moving to a city that is a fifth of the size of the city I grew up in.

While Texas Tech University may be located in what has frequently been referred to as the most boring city in America, I wouldn't have it any other way. Sure, Lubbock might be more 'boring,' or 'flatter,' or 'dustier' than some other nearby cities that serve as sites for other major universities, but nothing quite compares to the experience of living in a 'college town.' The list can go on and on, but here are a few of my favorite perks:

1. Everyone knows everyone.

Small town kids know this. Coming from San Antonio, the nation's 7th most populated city, it doesn't exactly work that way. Being a college student, this is a fantastic networking opportunity.

2. You see people you know almost every time you leave your apartment.

I know some of you are reading this and thinking "that's a perk?!" Yes, it is! Well, for me anyway. I actually really enjoy seeing people I know in public— at the store, at a restaurant, out on Friday night and even at that quaint little coffee shop— which leads me to the next perk...

3. Coffee shops.

Sure, you may be able to find a plethora of them in any major city, but coffee shops are a signature of any college town. They're always so unique and one of my favorites places to study!

4. You can get anywhere in 10 minutes or less.

(While also driving the speed limit.) Seriously. Becuase Lubbock is much smaller than other large cities where colleges are located, it's really easy to navigate. Also, there's almost never traffic.

5. Looking for nightlife? It's just 20 steps from campus.

This might be my favorite perk. Since Lubbock is partially known for housing Tech, a popular slew of restaurants, bars, and shops are located directly across from the front door of campus. Additionally, it is not uncommon to run into friends, classmates, co-workers and, on occasion, TAs.

6. Community support.

Lubbock loves Tech. Residents and locals have so much pride for Texas Tech, regardless of their alma mater. Seeing red, black and double T's everywhere you go makes you feel right at home!

While Lubbock may not be the most exciting place to visit or live, it is definitely the perfect college town.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
