Not too long ago, I met a young woman who wanted to help others. I did not know this because she went outright and said it. Words were unnecessary, they had left this realm and gave freedom to a new one; one where her body took over and spoke to us. Every syllable waved through her tongue and rolled off her body. Her hand movements gliding off the air as she spilled out her experience as an explanation. Her body quivering, shaking as tears streamed from her eyes and sobs floated within space and time. There were absent sighs. The sighs we typically make when we say we want to help others; sighs heavy with pain, sadness, resignation.
People always express desire for charity, whether it’s through helping others or advocating for something. How many of us can express the urgent need and compassion that comes with helping others, letting our bodies and actions speak for us rather than just spewing words out of our mouths? Never, there will always be sighs in between the words spoken, whether it’s a sigh of the mouth or body. There is a turmoil twisting our insides with knots that calms down only after our body tenses and begs for air. The turmoil that is experienced comes from not knowing how to help others. How can we help others when we don’t see what our good deeds do?
We sigh because our desperation is a lot stronger than our desire to help others. Some of us do want to genuinely help others and our actions are a reflection of that. However, there are many of us who just say we want to help others but don’t do anything about it. Part of it is because as a generation we have become desensitized to the evils of the world; we see it too often for it to evoke a reaction from us. Part of it is also that our good deeds go unnoticed and we seldom see it make a difference. It is like a ripple effect, one good deed creates a chain of events, but we only see what is immediately in front of us and miss the bigger picture. Not often do we see someone who so wholly wants to help others.
Something that people constantly need to be reminded of is that good deeds do not go unnoticed. That despite the constant wars, hatred, and overall corruption going on in our world, there has to be someone to help. One simple action can go a long way and touch others in a way we may not see. People always say they want to help others but don’t genuinely mean it. The world is missing people with passion, a passion for charity. If at least half of us performed a good deed, I promise it will make such a huge difference. If your passion does not lie in helping others, there are always ways to help indirectly. Like I mentioned before, one small deed can go a long way.
