2 days 21 hours 39 minutes. That’s how long it takes to watch The Office. Now times that by probably 8. That’s how much time I’ve spent watching this show. Why? Because it’s comedically hilarious (hope you caught that reference).
Some look with disgust when I mention that I’ve seen The Office through at least 8 times (not to mention I’ve seen my favorite episode’s dozens of times). My friend even told me I need to get a life, at least, that’s what she said. No, really she did. Do I regret this? No. I believe each episode has made me stronger. Now I have the strength of a man and a TV series. Each time I’ve watched the show I’ve realized so much. About my own life, about social situations, and the many levels of sheer brilliance of the show. From seeing Jim confess his love to Pam to understanding how to prank the crap out of someone. I've even received sound advice.
But really, there are so many lines and glances that go unnoticed by the novice fan, so my one tip, as I inspire you to binge watch it again, is to use subtitles and notice everyone’s expression. There is no other show that has this many levels of comedic relief. The Office has the iceberg effect. The main dialogue as it’s tip, and the rest is from subtle glances from Jim to Michael’s misused or mispronounced sayings and words (and stuff like this).
Now I could spend, 9,986,000 minutes explaining why I love this show. (Another reference. Look alive, Halpert.) But I only have like 500 words.
The development of the characters is perfectly timed. As each character grows to endure one another, so do we. It takes seasons to truly endear Michael or find Dwight not repulsive, but when we finally reach that point these characters can tap into another level of brilliance. While Michael begins as socially incompetent person, he progresses into someone endearing. He taps into the part of you that really wants what he wants. The ketchup fights, and the picket fence. (Who was the director of that episode, J.J. Abrams?) So, let’s be honest, we’ve all thought we could pull a Survivor man like Michael, solely because we have seen all of Man vs. Wild or Survivor Man.
The Office is exceptional in that several of the actors were actually writers for the show. Take a glance at who has written many of these episodes: Steve Carrel (Michael), B.J Novak (Ryan), Mindy Kaling (Kelly), Paul Lieberstein (the Evil Snail, Toby).
After watching through the majority of comedic style shows, I have come to the conclusion that The Office is the single greatest TV show of its kind. I mean, how great was Andy’s last quote?
Finally, what kind of show is best? False. The Office is best.
Now, if you disagree with me, I have but one question: Why are you the way that you are? Honestly, every time I try to do something fun or exciting, you make it not that way. I hate so much about the things that you choose to be.
I DECLARE bankruptcy of word count.
