The New Guy

How I am now writing in the public eye and how it terrifies me.

My whole life I had few ideas of what I wanted to do for the future. From having a family or my dream job, there wasn't much to think about. When you grow up with a mom who has a Masters in Counseling, you become very well adjusted early on in life. I knew that most High School relationships were dumb and full of pointless drama, so I avoided them. Don't get me wrong there were girls that I would have liked to date, but never really tried to. For a job, all I ever did with my time was play sports and video games so I had ideas of becoming a professional athlete or a YouTuber. Both ideas would take time and effort I wasn't yet willing to give yet. Then college rolled around and I was at a place in my life where i wasn't mature enough for college, but I wanted to finally be free as an adult. So, I worked and filled my time with activities and hobbies that I found interest in. My friends and I would golf during the summer and play hockey during the winter, I read more books and watched different movies.

I opened myself up to these new experiences like I never had before. The first to notice this change was my mother. One day during a dinner that just happened to be me and her, my step-dad and half-siblings were gone camping, and she looked at me and said I had become more of an adult in the last weeks. I may have dropped out of college and was working a job that seemed menial, but I was in a managerial position and making good money, I was outside more and meeting new people.

Then one night, I was reading the Percy Jackson series and thought to myself, "What if Percy had landed on Calypso's island sooner, how would that work out?" so I went online and discovered the wide, and strange, world of Fan Fiction. This was amazing, all these people were making new adventures and stories out of what already existed. so I joined up and wrote my first Fan Fiction. It got follows and favorites, more and more people started to read my story and I thought to myself, "Wow, writing is fun," this coming after High School where any writing assignment was the work of the Devil, so I was surprised to say the least. Then my friend was telling me about a website that allowed users to post articles on anything they want and that he had just been accepted to be a writer on it. The Odyssey. Here I am, laying out my life, basically, and giving my ideas and opinions a place to rest and be spread around. My name is Ryland Wood, and I'm the New Guy.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
