I am overwhelmed. I went into the "Ghostbusters" reboot strong but with low expectations because of all the nay-saying from news stories and macho men. As a feminist who believes in girl power (thanks, Spice Girls!), this movie was exhilarating. (I'm writing this article on the high of just seeing it, so pardon all of my emotions.) We have four strong female leads who are all scientists of different races. It breaks that stereotype to begin with, but then it switches another cliche movie character: the dumb girl. Usually in a movie, we are overloaded with white men who ogle over a hot, yet incredibly dumb, girl. You know who I'm talking about. The perfect bodied blonde who doesn't know how to work a microwave and only cares about her new purse. Even if the movie or show isn't about men, we see the dumb female character everywhere. See: "Mean Girls", "The House Bunny", "Glee", "The Big Bang Theory", "Clueless"... The list goes on and spans generations. It was honestly refreshing to see man that was just there to be an idiotic hunk surrounded by genius women!!! You can tell Chris Hemsworth had a great time playing Kevin, and for good reason because the character is truthfully hilarious.
Another thing great about this movie: It passes the Bechdel test. In simplest summary, the Bechdel test rules that a movie 1) must have at least two women in it, 2) who talk to each other, 3) about something other than a man. Actually, this reboot annihilates the Bechdel test! 99 percent of the movie's female dialogue is scientific. SCIENTIFIC WOMEN WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT MEN!!! I'm LIVING! Girls are being inspired by this movie! Kristen Wiig ran into little girls in Ghostbusters gear on the red carpet. Young girls are coming out to see this movie and are talking about it because they have smart, funny women to look up to. This is an important feminist statement to young girls who want to pursue the fields of science and math.
The importance of gender aside, the movie itself was just funny. Not laugh-out-loud-spitting-out-soda funny, but subtle giggling occasional honking laughs funny. In every scene I was at least laughing a little bit. From the first scene of the movie I was laughing! And the action sequences? CGI-loaded, but very fun and, for a women's fight scene, very intense.
Basically, I'm just very jazzed about this whole thing. It was a great movie and I'm sick of people who haven't even seen it giving it a bad name. Honestly, most of these people are sexist, extreme "how dare ladies do things" fanboys. I've even seen some girls hating on how it's all female. Please, stop hating on this movie just because it's a remake of an old classic and actually give it a chance. I promise it's worth it.
