“Well, if God truly exists, then why does he let all of these bad things happen? Why does evil exist?” As a Christian, I hear these questions all the time from nonbelievers. The truth is evil exists because God gave us free will. It may be hard to hear that we—the human race—create evil; however, when trying to deny this fact, remember a time when you have done something wrong. Now it doesn’t seem so impossible, does it?
The next question I normally hear is as follows: “Well, if God knew that we would mess up then why didn’t he just stop it from happening?” The answer to that question is easy. God had a plan. He loved us so much that he sent his only begotten son to die on the cross for our wrong doings. He let Adam and Eve eat that forbidden fruit because He knew that in the future a price would be paid, and in turn, His people will never be separated from Him. It is then that His people will live with him for all eternity. It is a gift of hope to those who do truly believe in Him and want to follow Him.
Another question I am frequently asked is “How can you believe in something you cannot physically see?” I know that the air is real, and so does everybody else. However, I cannot see the air. I can see the evidence of its existence through the wind. Just like the air, I can see the evidence of God’s existence. I have seen God through good works around the world. I see Him through the eyes of fellow Christians. I feel His presence in worship. His presence is so strong that nothing can compare to it. Faith is also evidence of His existence; faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen (KJV).
The existence of God is so simple and real. Many just choose to ignore it out of fear or pride. Jesus has made it so easy for us. All we have to do is believe in God and His son Jesus Christ and believe that Jesus died for our sins. Then, we repent—that is we confess we are sinners—and ask for forgiveness. It is that simple.
The question “Why do you make such a big deal about it? It’s just a religion.” is another commonly asked question and remark I get as a Christian. I don’t flaunt my religion. However, because I am a Christian my religion will come up in my conversations. It is a basic part of my life. As a Christian, talking about Christianity is as casual as some people talk about football. I don’t push my religion on anybody because it has to be that person’s choice; I cannot make that choice for somebody else. Christianity is the basic building block of my life. I will not push it away for anybody. It is a big deal to me. Every choice I make is based upon what Jesus has in store for me.
The final common question I am typically asked is “How can you have a relationship with God?” Devoting my life to Jesus and praying daily helps me have a healthy relationship with God. The Bible is the living word and every time I open it Jesus speaks to me through it. For example, when I need comfort I always somehow end up reading a verse in the Bible about comfort. When I need help I call upon Jesus, and this is another way of building my relationship with God. When I put my trust in Jesus, I realize that I can trust Him more than myself. I also realize that He is in control. As a result, I become closer to Him.
These are the common questions I am asked as a Christian. I have answered them as fully as I can from a Christian’s perspective. I pray that these answers satisfy the curiosity often accompanied with what it means to be a Christian.
