If you're from Michigan, you know that the Mackinac Bridge is quite the spectacle. If you aren't from the Lake State, then visiting the bridge is a must. Of course there are other bridges, but the Mackinac Bridge is not like others. When you cross this bridge you're staying in the same state, or are you? For those who have crossed the 5 mile suspension bridge, you know that it separates two different worlds. The lower peninsula is an entire different place than the U.P. yet, we are united as one. The lower peninsula experiences a faster pace of life with large cities, while the the upper peninsula is a giant forest with a more easy going pace of life. The people are completely different, and the upper peninsula even identifies themselves as Yoopers.
It is so cool to think that the two halves are so different yet we're all Michiganders. If you're planing on traveling any time soon, the bridge is a great place to stop. This place has been dear to my families heart so we make it an annual trip each year. It's a very peaceful and beautiful place.
For years my family and I have traveled here, we've done a lot of different fun things.
Five things I recommend doing are:
1. Bridge Viewing at the park from the St. Ignace side
2. Pick a fudge shop and buy fudge!
3. Fort Michilimackinac (Fee to get in)
4. Parasailing in St. Ignace
5. Go swimming in one of the Great Lakes, even if the water is cold, which it will be.
The two photos above were taken from the St. Ignace side of the bridge. The water was still and I was able to look out and see the bridge "floating on light".
This picture was taken from the Mackinac City side. On this side you're able to get closer to the bridge, close enough to even walk under part of it. Really, both sides have different scenes.
Enjoy!
