The Middle School Mind Set

Spending one day with a middle schooler can change all the plans you thought you had for your future.

One of the hardest questions in life is "what do you want to do when you grow up?" For the last year of my life I have known that I want to be a high school English teacher. I have observed many classes and seen glimpses of what teaching a high school class would be like. A few days ago I had an incredible opportunity to go out into the Dubuque education community and volunteer at Washington Middle school’s STEM field day.

Spending one day with these middle schoolers opened my eyes to a whole new world. A wild, loud, difficult, and rewarding world. I had the opportunity to spend a few hours with a sixth grade class as they traveled from station to station. I saw students challenge themselves to figure out how to achieve a goal, and I saw students challenge others to achieve their goals. I saw the excitement a sixth grader can bring to running in a circle, and the drama they can bring to standing still. The crazy part is I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it, that this age group isn’t my cup of tea, but after spending time with this class I began to question that feeling.

Later on in the day I was awarded the opportunity to run my own stations for the seventh and eighth graders. I feel bad for the first couple of groups I had to teach the games to. I hadn’t quite gotten a handle of being in charge of 30 kids and having to teach a game and get them to actually do it in under ten minutes. However, after a few groups moved through I started to really enjoy it. I found ways to deal with the students that commanded respect but earned their interest at the same time. I made connections with the teachers and was given small gifts of expertise and experience that are truly priceless to me.

That day gave me a perspective that all I know I want to do with my life is teach and the reason I am in college getting a teaching degree is so I can figure out where I need to teach and how to be successful for my students.

Not knowing what you want to do with your life is a blessing. Your life is one giant opportunity to experience the wild, crazy, things that you may think you hate but end up loving. Not knowing is a temporary gift, but knowing what you want to do, even if it’s only a small part of what you hope for your future, is an inner power that is incomparable and very much so worth the wait.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
