The "Mid-Semester Sickness"

It's that time of year again.

It is that time of year when everyone starts to feel very “over” the whole school thing. Students are becoming unmotivated, procrastination becomes a regular entity and all that anyone can think about is counting down the days until winter break. Not to mention, the temperature is dropping along with everyone’s spirits. Some call it seasonal change; I call it the Mid-Semester Sickness.

Mid-Semester Sickness starts to take its toll after students get the taste of fall break. A mere two days is all it takes to get us off track and wanting more than just two days away from all the class, homework, group projects and waking up for that 8:30 a.m. class we all want to skip.

Have I mentioned midterms yet? Mid-Semester Sickness is one thing, and adding on a plethora of midterms the week after fall break does not make matters any easier. As students, it is in our blood to dangerously wait until last minute to cram every single vocab word/formula/process/reading all into a single night’s work. While this may work for some, others simply cannot make a passing grade that way. Why do we do this? During midterm season it is like Professors, all congregate and form up this horrendous plan to have their midterms on the same day. It should be illegal to have four midterms in one day…just saying.

Think you have the “Mid-Semester Sickness”? Here is a checklist to determine the truth:

1. You suddenly need to procrastinate on every single little project/homework assignment.

2. Feeling more and more okay with skipping your classes and sleeping instead.

3. Frequent thoughts about Winter break and all the fun things you can do without the stress of schoolwork.

4. Feelings of uncertainty about the change of the season.

5. Do I pack my summer clothes away for good or wait it out just a little longer?

6. Feeling literally “sick” but not being sick at all.

7. Homesickness!

8. Anger toward the massive amounts of homework/exams after fall break that you knew about but are still mad at anyway.

9. Wanting a longer fall break.

If you or anyone you know are experiencing any of these symptoms you may have been exposed to or even have gotten the dreaded “Mid-Semester Sickness.” If this is the case, please calm down, and take a night off and hang out with friends, go out to the bar, throw a party, watch a movie with friends. Maybe your cure is just a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and a glass of wine. Either way, this sickness does not last long. Remember to take care of yourself and make time for things that are not school related… I mean, everyone needs “their time” just to stay sane in this hectic college life.

Other than that, the only other cure for this illness is Winter Break. But have no fear, winter break is almost here! We are only getting closer to the home-cooked meals, siblings, pets, and high school buddies we are all longing to see… and for that reason, just keep truckin’ on, break will be here before we, know it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
