Last Thursday, I was lucky enough to attend the #YeezySeason3 event at a local AMC Theater where Kanye West premiered his new album and fashion line. Prominent celebrities from Caitlyn Jenner to 2 Chainz were all in attendance.
Mr. West walked in the building, turned on his laptop, and played some of the best hip-hop music of the year. A few artists featured on his album, “The Life Of Pablo,” are Chance The Rapper, Young Thug, Rihanna, and Ty Dolla Sign.
This album is impressive because of its dichotomy. “Ultra Light Beam” has background gospel singers and a soulful ambiance and songs like “Highlights” feature hard drums and fast verses. This album is all over the place regarding genre, but it still comes together to form a beautiful piece of art. Is that why this album is named “The Life of Pablo,” juxtaposing the dichotomy of gospel music and rap to the life of Pablo Escobar? Escobar lived a morally ambiguous life, using his drug money to help the poor people of Columbia. Maybe that is what Kanye was thinking.
"The Life Of Pablo" also addresses some of the drama that Kanye has experienced since his last album in 2013. He has a line directed at Ray J (One of Kim K’s previous relationships) that says, “I bet me and Ray J would be friends if we didn’t like the same b****. Yeah, he might have hit it first, only problem is I’m rich.” According to Kanye’s manager, he reached out to Ray J to ask for permission before making this track. Kanye also received criticism for a lyric about Taylor Swift, but he also asked permission from Ms. Swift before releasing the song. The point is that Mr. West is having fun making an album that not only sounds good, but that also addresses a good amount of his criticism.
There has been some recent dissatisfaction with the album regarding its release. Kanye originally intended this to be a shorter album, but, due to the demand, he has put 17 tracks on his forthcoming project. The album will be released by the beginning of next week.
In my opinion, the best part of #YeezySeason3 was its simplicity. It was just Kanye, his friends, and an aux cord. Kanye is known for not smiling. During his premiere, he was grinning from ear to ear, dancing, and singing along to his project. It was refreshing to see an artist who I love making music that he enjoys while surrounded by others who love it just as much. After his album was done playing, he let Young Thug, Vic Mensa, and others take the aux cord and premiere their music. Let it be known that the entire Kardashian family left at the beginning of Vic’s new song, so there was no love for him there.
You may be wondering why I have not mentioned the fashion. Kanye’s new clothing line looks straight out of Star Wars. Every model looked like they are wearing a burlap sack or a Jedi Robe. Regarding organization, the models were all under a tarp until the second song began, when hundreds of young, skinny models wearing all of Kanye’s new line were revealed. To me, this was secondary in purpose compared to the quality of the music.
