The summer hot spots of Long Island, New York have always been Fire Island. This barrier island stretches for 31 miles, parallel to Long Island. Those 31 miles are filled with endless beaches, homes, restaurants, beach stores and countless beach bars. No matter what community you're in whether it be Kismet or Fire Island Pines or Ocean Beach, there's always a party and fun to be had. What vacationers usually fail to realize is that those who work on the island are not on vacation.
Here's a little peek into the daily life of a Fire Island Slave.
1. Let's begin with the ferry ride.
Everyday we take this boat to work. We know the schedule like the back of our hands. Getting on the boat with already intoxicated party goers is never pleasant, but what's even worse is the late ride home with vomiting, screaming and yelling passengers. In the future, try to control yourself as best you can.
2. Normal work days are about eight hours.
But Fire Island is like another universe. On weekend and holidays our schedule can show us working anywhere from 12 to 14 hours in a single day. Our friends don't even bother trying to make plans with us Memorial Day weekend, the Fourth of July, or Labor Day weekend; they already know where we'll be.
3. How do the ocean waves look today?
Well the I wouldn't know because I've been in this building since I stepped off that ferry. Maybe if you go check out it out later you can let me know. Unless you're lucky enough to work on the ocean it's like being in a jewelry store, you can look but you can't touch.
4. It's still difficult to comprehend how many people continue to smoke cigarettes but regardless it's not my fault that our store closed 10 minutes ago and you need to buy another pack.
Looks like you need to find a friend or just wait until tomorrow when we open. What we'll never understand is why some insist on smoking on the deck of a restaurant while they're eating. First of all, its a health code violation, and second of all, its not my fault you can't do it. Don't shoot the messenger.
5. Other than being in beautiful beach communities, working on Fire Island does have its perks.
Celebrities also enjoy trips to Fire Island. Between Sarah Jessica Parker, Andy Cohen, Matt Bomer, Michael Kors, Robert John Burke and the Kardashians, we've pretty much seen them all.
So the next time you are enjoying your vacation, soaking up the sun and drinking endless Rocket Fuels on Fire Island, take a second to remember to be kind to your bartender, waiter or waitress and market clerk.
