An Open Letter to My Family

An Open Letter to My Family

Webster Dictionary defines family as, "a group of things related by common characteristics." I suppose an outsider could say that we have a few common characteristics. Not so much physically, more mentally and emotionally.

We have gone through a lot which has grown each of us. The divorce, change of schools, betrayals from other family members, medical hardships, financial obstacles, and so many simple challenges have made each of us become independent and courageous. We have made businesses, excelled in many occupations, and continue to strive in the ever changing face of today’s society. Our name has been praised, bashed, loved and hated. Our name has also been plastered on newspapers and social media alike. Many people in this small town know who we are. However, the simple fact of many people knowing who my family is has made me always face my circumstances head on.

After my own father abandoning my family and I shortly before my cousin was diagnosed with cancer, I could not run from the trails set in front of me. Of course I was confused, hurt, and frustrated, but I could not run and hide. Through all the hurt, pain, and heartache, my family went through it together. They are always there for me, even if I pushed them away (because we all know I have that tendency). The family that has stayed with me through everything I would not trade for the world. Well, because the family that has stayed is my world.

It becomes easy to take people for granted. After life has thrown more curve balls than a typical Major League Baseball game, we have taken a shot at each pitch. I never want to take my family for granted. We have seen with our own eyes how quickly life can pass you by.

Thanks for the family dinners and for the laughs we have shared. The countless trips, dark hide and seek games, and any sporting event will always hold a special place in my heart. Y'all have taught me that life is more enjoyable when a person laughs a little more and smiles just a little bit longer. Also, thank you for accepting me for all my quirks and flaws. I might be book smart, but my common sense is nowhere to be found. Lastly, thank you for always being there. We might be small, but I am constantly surrounded by people who push me, protect me, defend me, and test my limits. We have gone through so much and I would not be the girl I am today without my amazing family.

It's been a blast. I can not wait to see what the future holds for us.

I love you all.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
