Kutztown University is an old place. Since 1866, it has gone through several name changes, such as Keystone Normal School, Kutztown State Teachers College, Kutztown State College, and then finally Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Through all of that, though, the one thing that's remained the same since the beginning, has been the universities oldest building, respectively called Old Main. With Halloween right around the corner, I figured it would be a good time to explore the legend of the spooky building.
Old Main, today, is a building full of classrooms and offices. It also has four floors of dorm rooms. A few years ago, the residence portion of the building had been shut down due to lack of enrollment. The fifth floor of the building is now also used as other offices. The second, third, and fourth floor rooms, however, are still full of furniture, waiting for more students to move into them. That is, if they're willing to live with a ghost.
Back in 1895, Mary S. Snyder, a student at Kutztown, lived in Old Main. She was 22 years old and was scheduled to graduate on July 27th, 1895, but she died shortly before. The legend is that she killed herself. I've read in articles that this was because she was afraid to tell her parents that she was pregnant. However, other rumors suggest that it was a professor's baby, and he wanted nothing to do with her in fear of losing his job.
Further research was conducted, however, and it was told that she had died of heart failure right before she graduated. Since then, it had been speculated that her ghost still roamed the halls of the residential area.
Then, in 1991, spirit and demonology experts Ed and Lorraine Warren visited Kutztown University. (You may have heard of them from the movie "The Conjuring.") During their visit, the Warrens confirmed that Old Main was definitely haunted, not only by Mary Snyder, but by an old elderly woman as well. Lorraine Warren noted that they are both friendly ghosts, and students had no need to worry about benevolent acts. Both of the Warrens did warn, however, that no one should try to contact the spirits via Ouija board or tarot cards.
Some of the encounters with these ghosts include temperature changes, things moving, doors opening and closing, and lights turning on and off by themselves. Other encounters have been hearing strange noises or voices and hearing running through the halls when no one is there.
As if you thought The Evil Chicken made Old Main creepy enough, it just got creepier.
