Everyone in America is familiar with Apple products. We’ve all either had an iPod, whether a Nano, a Touch, or even a little baby Shuffle, an iPad, or most commonly an iPhone. We are also all very aware of the changes Apple makes to its products to force consumers like us to buy newer items.
Well, I am here to say enough is enough. I have had it with continually getting rid of my perfectly good phone just because Apple has come out with the latest one and my old one doesn’t fit the “system.” I am tired of knowing my Apple products only have a certain lifespan because something newer will come out and knock the old one off the counter and into the trash.
In 2012, Apple consumers were all painfully cognizant of the change in chargers for Apple products. When I purchased my iPhone 5, I had only one cord to charge my phone, whereas before this I had 10 of the older models at my fingertips. When that cord inevitably broke, I was forced to go out and spend more money to buy a new one. I now live in an irrational fear that this cord will break and I’ll be left with nothing to charge my phone. Sorry, Apple, a college student doesn’t have the money to go out and buy six cords just because your products don’t and wouldn’t live up to a lifetime guarantee.
Recently, I have come across rumors that the new iPhone 7 is obliterating the headphone jack. No longer can regular headphones be used in this new Apple product. What does that mean for us users? Well, at first, we will refuse to believe this outrageous act; we will complain that once again this multi-million dollar company is just doing it for money.
But then, a few months down the line, the iPhones we have will begin to feel the wear of “old age” and no longer will they be compatible with technologically advanced age. We will scrape together our pennies and head out to the nearest store to buy the new iPhone 7. A shameful amount of money will be demanded and we’ll have to pay or else be left without a phone. We’ll take home our new merchandise and remove it from the box; we’ll inhale the sweet smell of a brand new phone.
After a few hours with our new toy, we’ll want to listen to some music. Taking out our headphones we go to introduce them to their new friend, but no headphone jack, no place to plug in our connection to another world. But wait! Apple is now advertising brand new Bluetooth headphones! They will be compatible with the iPhone 7! Once again, we truck out to buy these new headphones, once again shelling out a disgraceful amount of money.
Now don't get me wrong -- I love my iPhone, but I am done with giving so much of my money to a company that is already swimming in wealth. I am done with replacing perfectly good products because the network forces me to. I am done giving in to consumerism, are you?
That's you when you have to spend money you don't have.
