The Last Drop: A Poem

Inhale, exhale.

163
Water drop

Imagine being stranded on a searing, dreary desert. The ground remains parched and tortured, screaming for an act of mercy. You join in as well, as the world that surrounds you starts to become less forgiving and kind. What you would do to have a drink of water meet your taste buds in that very moment, even if it's just a drop. You know that a drop would never be enough to satisfy you, but it is better than nothing in that given moment.

I wrote this poem with this message in mind: never settle for less. No matter what situation you are in, just know that there is so much more you can do than just accept what is being offered to you.

"The Last Drop"

It was the last drop of an icy tear

Trickling down my shivering, battered cheek

A gentle caress from your finger wiped it away

Everything is going to be alright

It was the last drop of your warm blood

Seeping from a cut the rose you got me gave you

I applied a patch to your tender, burning wound

Everything is going to be alright

It was the last drop of our frosty ice cream melting

It dripped as we both shared our first kiss

A hot, fiery summer awoke from its slumber

Everything is going to be alright

That first kiss…

My heart was set aflame with an aching desire for love

My cheeks blushed shamelessly like a scorching August heat

I believed that nothing could ever tear us apart

It was the last drop from the melting wax candle

When its light revealed your betrayal to me for another

A bone-chilling arctic winter replaced my once beaming days

Nothing is going to be alright

Your betrayal…

Raindrops fell like deadly blades

Piercing holes straight into my heart

Dousing my once blazing fire from within

It was the last drop of a bitter, unforgiving tear

Dried up on my frigid, clammy cheek

Today is the last day I will ever shed a tear for you

Someday, everything is going to be alright

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
