The Journey To Becoming A Dog Mom

Whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, I think I have to disagree.

The Journey To Becoming A Dog Mom
Emma Vandemore

I have always had a love for dogs, and I have always had one in my house for as long as I can remember. I love cuddling up on the couch with my pup and knowing she loves the attention and love I am giving her just as much as I am. Dogs are a wonderful blessing that us humans sometime underestimate. Think about, you can tell your dog anything and they won’t tell a soul. Sure they may not be listening to you, but when they see tears rolling down your cheeks they know you are sad and that means you need extra kisses. Dogs are man’s best friend.

This spring I went to go look at pigs with my dad. The first thing I do when I get out of the truck at any farm is give my attention to the farm dogs that run up and tackle me. Let me preface this by saying, I have always been obsessed with corgis. My dream in life was to own a hundred corgis. People can call me crazy corgi lady all they want, I was obsessed with them (and still am). SO I got out the truck at this farm and I was greeted by a corgi. Coincidence? I think not. I asked the guy what the dog’s name was. He told me her name and that she was pregnant. PREGNANT. That’s right. My life had just been made.

On our way home from the farm I talked my dad’s ear off about how great it would be to get another dog. I told him Oreo could use a pal (even though Oreo hated other dogs and got jealous when we didn’t give her our full attention). As I kept explaining all of the pros to my dad he finally cracked and said okay. But this time, this puppy was mine. ALL mine. My corgi dreams were finally coming true! Now all I had to do was wait for momma to pop those babies out.

About a month and a half later I received a text from the momma’s owner with a picture of 4 brand new baby corgis. There were two sable colored girls one tri colored boy, and one tri colored girl. Attached to the picture was a message that said, “here they are, take your pick!”. I instantly fell in love with the tri colored girl. After seeing her picture, I knew exactly what to name her, Tilly.

If any of you have corgis, you know just how easy it is to fall in love with them. When Tilly was ready to be picked up, I drove to the farm with my dad and met her for the first time.

This was the face that greeted me when I got out of the truck. My very own puppy. She was perfect. We got home and she went potty outside right away. I thought, wow this potty training thing won’t be bad at all. Boy was I wrong… (6 months and countless accidents later and she is finally potty trained). It took Oreo a while to get use to Til, but now they are best friends. I took Tilly everywhere with me this summer. We went to watch baseball games, we went to the park, and we went on countless car rides (which she was afraid of).

Tilly became my best friend, which made leaving her to go to college even harder. I think the thing I love about Tilly the most is her personality. I know, it sounds so weird to say that about a dog, but it is so true. She is the funniest puppy I have ever seen. Her favorite thing to do is play soccer with a tennis ball around the house. She runs into every wall and piece of furniture because she sometimes forgets how long her nose is.

Getting a puppy was the best decision I ever made. I don’t know what I would do without Til. She is the best listener, the best snuggler, oh and she is my best friend. So whoever said diamonds are a girl’s best friend, I think I have to disagree.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
