"What do you want to be when you grow up?" If you were to ask me when I was five I would have said "Cinderella." If you were to ask me when I was 10 I would have said "Troy Bolton's girlfriend." If you were to ask me when I was 13 I would have said "the first female president." If you were to ask me when I was 17 I would have said "a psychologist." Now when you ask me I will tell you that all I want is to be a nanny for the rest of my life, and oh how I truly wish I could be.
I know a lot of you are thinking a ton of totally real and adult-ish things about nannies and how there are no real benefits to the job and how you can't get paid cash your entire life. Don't get me wrong, that's all kind of true... but trust me when I say being a nanny is one of the most rewarding and humbling jobs out there. No, the benefits don't involve health insurance coverage or a huge six-figure salary but they are pretty cool. For one you are these kids' role model, best friend, and the coolest adult ever (aside from mom and dad of course). You get to come over during the day while mom and dad go to work and go on adventures and play at the park and eat mac-n-cheese and juice boxes for lunch, sorry business man but to me that's a lot better than coffee in the break room. Nannies get to build forts and help with homework at the same time because with us not everything needs to be serious! We are literally adult friends to these little ones and in their eyes it is beyond cool. Being a nanny opens up an entirely different realm of love and adoration for those tiny human beings running all over the planet and it is the most rewarding benefit ever.
There are a lot of little perks to being the nanny too, like when we're the bad guy they more than likely are going to get over it quicker than when the parents are the bad guys. When your mom says no ice cream before dinner she's obviously out to ruin your life, but when your nanny says no ice cream before dinner it's just because there's some pretty kick ass dinosaur nuggets and smiley fries coming your way and who wants to spoil that feast with ice cream? As a parent myself it kills me to admit this... but we will never be as fun and cool as the giant play friends we pay to hang out with our children.
However, there is more to being a nanny than playing and making fun meals. There are those amazing moments where that sweet little one looks at the clock and complains that the day is almost over and they're heartbroken because they know that means you have to leave them soon. There's that moment when that adorable toddler finally learns your name and screams it with excitement when they see you walking up their driveway. There's that moment when the parents make you feel like you are a major part of their family and it fills your heart with all the love in the world. It is truly one of the most amazing and special feelings when you realize how important you are to these children, but even more so how important they are to you.
