We are currently in an age where people cannot have dinner without checking their phone multiple times. When is the last time you saw someone read a book for a research paper? And social media is taking over our lives.
I'll admit, I am a huge social media user. It's addictive. It sounds dumb, but getting a certain amount of likes on an Instagram post feels kinda good, and reading comments like "Wow, this is gorgeous" is a huge confidence booster.
But this is a huge problem: that one's self-confidence rides on how much attention he or she gets on social media.
Why is it so hard to just be confident in yourself? It all comes back around to social media. Scrolling through Instagram and seeing beautiful girl after beautiful girl is hard. You think to yourself, "Why don't I look like that?" or "Kendall Jenner is my age, modeling for the biggest companies in the world while I'm sitting in my bed in my apartment...."
But you have to realize that most people choose not to put up bad pictures of themselves. I'm sure that girl in your Spanish class doesn't look that perfect and put together on a regular basis, but she's not going to post that for all the world to see.
So stop comparing yourself to the people you follow on Instagram—you're really just comparing your filter choices, lighting, and proximity to a cool background.
I'm not saying to stop using social media (I'm definitely not deleting my Instagram), but I'm saying not to let it have so much weight in how you feel about yourself.
After all, look at models like Brooklyn Decker and Nina Agdal, probably some of the hottest people you've ever seen. And they choose to post weird pictures and videos of themselves. To me, that's what makes them the most likable—having the ability to laugh at yourself and have others see who you truly are.
So live your life. Be confident. Be yourself and stop worrying about other people.
