I read an article recently titled: "What Would Make You Care About Aleppo?"
Amongst all of the feelings that came back to me when reading this article it all came down to one feeling. Anger.
What am I angry at?
For one thing, I am angry at myself for not being educated on this topic sooner. But then I became angry at everyone else. Friends. Family. People I don't even know. Because this isn't just a personal issue for me. This just goes to show how we, as Americans, don't educate ourselves on world issues.
I don't mean to generalize Americans as a whole. For some of you, I'm sure that you actively watch the news and take time out of your day to educate yourselves. I wish that I could pin this on a certain age group of people, but the fact is, people don't care about what is going on in the world. I don't mean to write this in anger. I don't mean to sound gruesome or cruel. But the fact is...I am sick and tired of people walking around pretending like there aren't horrific things happening in our world.
As the CNN article points out, it makes sense that people don't care. The people being effected by the crisis in Syria are not your friends. You don't know these people. Their suffering is not your concern. It's hard for us to connect personal feelings about these people because we do not know them personally.
But let's step into their shoes for a moment.
The citizens in Syria, particularly in Aleppo, live everyday in constant terror. They have experienced events that we, as Americans, simply don't experience. Speaking for myself, I've never woken up to the sound of bombs or people screaming. When I hear an ambulance outside, I don't generally think that there has been a shooting, or that there was a mass bombing. I've never known what it is like to live in a war zone. But these people who live in Syria have experienced all of these things.
I know that world politics isn't particularly interesting for some people. I understand that we have our own personal issues and that sometimes we simply don't have time to care about world issues. I understand that as Americans, we simply do not understand what these people in Aleppo are going through. It is hard for us to connect personal feelings to the events going on there. Yes, I understand all of these things.
But this should impose personal feelings. When you do research, you should be outraged. It should be an eye opener. It should inspire you to make change happen. It should inspire you to tell others and to educate others. For one second, we need to stop focusing on the people coming and going from the Trump Towers and place our focus on something much bigger.
The issues at hand may not effect you now, and they may not ever. But as humans, we need to be more aware of the things that are happening. You may glance at this article, not ever do the research and move on with your life, but I challenge you to be the person to do the research and educate yourself.
