As a sophomore in college this fall semester, I decided to take a different approach to my involvement compared to my freshman year. As a freshman, I decided to focus on academics so I only joined a couple clubs and wasn’t as involved as I'd wished on campus.
Over the summer, in addition to working, I tried to figure out what I was passionate about and how I could apply that to my career and the upcoming fall semester. I knew that I loved writing, anything business related, and black people. So first before the semester began, I signed up to be a part of Tuskegee’s Odyssey community. Then once classes started, I began to join organizations that piqued my interest. I’m the kind of person that likes to stay busy and be productive because if I’m just laying around all the time then I feel like I’m not contributing to the betterment of myself or the people around me. Working with NAACP, Treasury Committee, and Melanination Media just to name a few, has helped me in meeting new people with similar goals, being more creative, and working in difficult situations.
This past homecoming week, I was the most involved I have ever been in working with Treasury Committee and Pre-Alumni Council. Although I was busy, I was getting things done and making someone else’s job easier so I still had fun.
Although it took me until my second year in college to really get involved in campus organizations, I’m glad that I didn’t wait until my last year of college to do so. Your college campus and the community around you becomes your home for the next four or more years and it’s important to make the most of it.
