If you share a Netflix account with anyone - family, friends - or if you mooch off of someone else’s account, you are well schooled in Netflix etiquette. But that doesn’t mean you have to like it. The emotions you encounter are diverse and deserve description, so here ya go.
Now, I share an account with my two sisters. We only have two screens. Needless to say, we run into problems. The most frequent would be:
Horror #1: You run out of screens.
OH THE HORROR! Honestly, this is the worst. When you’re trying to watch Gilmore Girls but both of your sisters are trying to watch Gilmore Girls so you end up in an endless cycle of kicking each other off the account, aggressively trying to watch Gilmore Girls. It just descends into madness and shambles. Anger, sadness, and helplessness reign when you can’t watch your show.
Horror #2: You can see what other people are watching.
I don’t know about you, but I DON'T WANT to know that my little sister has been marathoning The Suite Life of Zack and Cody at age 16. That points to deeper problems of which I WANT to remain ignorant. There are psychological inferences inherent in one’s watching patterns that I would rather not recognize. It’s none of my beeswax.
Horror #3: Other people can see what you’re watching.
I have no shame in the fact that I’m watching rom-coms on repeat. I just don’t want my sisters to know…I would never hear the end of it. Sorry that I believe Colin Firth is a king among men. I don’t want to be judged for listening to his sweet, sweet accent for two hours.
Horror #4: Your suggestions change to fit another person’s watching patterns.
You will never find me watching American Horror Story. EVER. But I cannot speak for my older sister. You will never find me watching Glee. EVER. But I cannot speak for my little sister. Thus, when Netflix makes suggestions for ME based on their program preferences, it is not helpful, not helpful at all. I just want more shows like 30 Rock… Is that too much to ask?
Horror #5: Taking too long to pick something and finding there isn’t a screen available to watch it.
You scroll and scroll and pick out that perfect program to watch, only to find that you took too long and your account is used up. I once spent 30 minutes perusing the Action and Adventure section, looking for the perfect movie to liven up a dull, random Wednesday. When I finally settled on Gladiator, I discovered, to my horror, that I could not watch it. In my caution to select the correct movie, I took too long, and all the screens were already occupied… I was not happy.
Now you know the horrors of Netflix - watch responsibly, my friends.
