Earlier this week President Barak Obama sent a letter out to all schools regarding the issue of transgender use of bathrooms. In this joint letter with the Departments of Education and Justice, the President states that, "Transgender students need ... A supportive and nondiscriminatory school environment." However, it seems as if some school officials will not have this. After the news of this letter was released to schools around the nation a local superintendent of the Southeast Texas area spoke out not only to the bathroom issue but about our nation's leader himself.

Here is what Dr. Rodney Cavness had to say:

This man is why the area that I have been raised in my whole life has been on the Forbes list of the least educated towns in the United States of America. This man does not know what he is talking about. For one, this is simply a letter. The letter has no force in it whatsoever; the letter is only able to give the administrators of these schools guidance on how to handle this issue. Yet, the letter has a very clear underlying message: follow these ground rules or your school will have no more federal funding.

Also, Dr. Cavass is implying that the transgender students who attend school in this area will not go to the restroom to just "use the bathroom," but to sexually assault other students and this is exactly what the President and our government are trying to prevent.

"There is no room in our schools for discrimination of any kind, including discrimination against transgender students on the basis of their sex. This guidance gives administrators, teachers and parents the tools they need to protect transgender students from...harassment and address unjust school policies."

Students of the school district cannot have discrimination against their fellow students if their own superintendent does not trust them and is discriminating against them on local and national television. We are not living in the Old South of discrimination and hate anymore. Hurtful and underlying comments such as those is what is making our country close minded and ignorant. Furthermore, it is not as if you are a boy and you decide to put on a dress you can go into the girls bathroom. That is not the case here and that is not what transgender is. Before making a public statement on a profound matter such as this, one (Dr. Cavass) should research a topic and what it truly means before saying the first thing that is on his mind. Take time to look up the definition of transgender and those in the community. I'm sure you wouldn't be able to tell that they were once the opposite sex because they truly identify as the opposite gender.

Lastly, President Obama is your president sir, whether you like it or not. With someone that has their doctorates degree, one should know their civics better. Just like the president before him and the president before that one, they were still your president because the office of president rules the entire nation and over all Americans, which you, yourself, are.

The words said by Dr. Rodney Cavass and other southeast Texas school districts are heartbreaking. Where there is a family restroom, is one not afraid that a transgender person has used that restroom before them, or that waiting outside there will be a transgender man or woman waiting to use the restroom while they are in it? It is the same exact principle but without an open mind or plain ignorance blocking the view of others there is no way of solving the issue. Think before you speak and let's not hate because hate is discriminating.
