The world of gaming is mourning the passing of a great and well-known gamer: Satoru Iwata, (now former) President of Nintendo.
Iwata was the president of Nintendo from May 2002 until his untimely passing on July 11, 2015, at the age of 55. According to nintendo.wikia.com, he was only the fourth president of Nintendo. He was also the first president of Nintendo not to be related to the Yamauchi family, who were the founders of Nintendo. So why should we care about his death? Well, before he became Nintendo's president, he worked at HAL Laboratory as a programmer for games such as "Kirby" series, "Super Smash Bros." series and the "EarthBound" series. He then became the director of the same company and oversaw the development of even more games while also helping out when it was needed at places such as the Pokemon Stadium.
In 2002, Hiroshi Yamauchi announced his retirement as President of Nintendo and named Iwata as as his successor. According to nintendo.wikia.com, Iwata over saw the creation of "Metroid Prime", "Star Fox" series, "Animal Crossing" series, "Mario Kart" Wii, "Super Mario Galaxy" series, and so on. He also oversaw the creation some of the most influential consoles (and some of Nintendo's not so great consoles) in gaming history, like the GameCube, the Nintendo DS, the Wii, the Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U. He was absent at the recent E3 event due to a health problem. It was later determined that he was in surgery removing a bile duct tumor. He died of bile duct complications July 11, 2015.
During his time as president, he loved games and strove to provide what consumers wanted. He did not want to compete with Microsoft or Sony by doing what they wanted to do. He loved games so much that he could not fire anyone from Nintendo when profits fell in 2011 and Iwata decided to cut his pay by 50 percent! According to Kotaku.com, Satoru Iwata took a 50% pay cut due to the poor sales of the 3DS. If that does not show love for the gaming industry I don't what is anymore. He is also loved by many gamers around the world as well. According to Kotaku.com, in Russia gamers made a memorial for Satoru Iwata at the Japanese embassy.
He truly loved games, and he will be missed dearly by many fans and gamers.
