Wouldn't you want your state to matter, no matter where you live?

The Great 'Fly Over' State Debate
Road Trips

This is by no means a positive issue.

When I say great, I mean largely impacting many people and their hometown and state pride. Some people probably will read this article, or maybe even merely its title, and decide they don't need to worry about brushing aside the lives of citizens in these “flyover states”. But the people and places in each of the states considered to be "unimportant" in the grand scheme of things should not continue to be classified that way.

Which, if any, states are fly over states?

I’ll use lyrics from “Fly Over States" by Jason Aldean to describe and back up my arguments here.

This concept really is terrible, because people are essentially implying that they don't matter, but that isn't the case. They might not be as popular in terms of tourism. But people who make up families might be from them, and livelihoods were made there. Regardless of how many have trekked through, or how many landmarks are made along the roads and throughout its cities, these states matter.

I think the most popular flyover states would be the ones in the central part of the U.S. -- the midwest -- places with less destination spots than say, Florida, Hawaii, California, and New York.

The song lyrics perfectly portray the thoughts of people who don't understand. It starts out by showing the typical people, a "couple guys in first class on a flight from New York to Los Angeles." These ones are the most guilty, I think, because they haven't been exposed to small town life.

Take California and New York to be two of the states that are most guilty of this. They are often considered to be the states where a person goes to make a name for themselves, or to start a new, better, life. But just because there are more people living in those states, that doesn't mean they should be regarded as "more important" than smaller states.

"30,000 feet above what would be Oklahoma" and “…man it all looks the same” show how much ignorance people can really have in terms of countryside and small cities, compared to big ones. Of course it looks roughly the same at 30,000 feet. It’s all green, brown, or various shades of the two, with the rest of the colors mixed in here and there from manmade everything.

These passengers and people like them often have never been to these smaller states, shown in the line, “…never drove through Indiana, met the man who plowed that earth, planted that seed, busted his ass for you and me…” It's true. Many of the places considered to be fly over country are the ones that grow food for the "important" ones. If the "CEO-type people" -- those who consider themselves "better than" farmers or other people from the fly over states would stop and try to understand the lives of those in small towns, they would realize that they owe gratitude to those farmers they so conveniently forget about.

“Who'd wanna live down there, in the middle of nowhere?” and “breathe in all that open space” are a couple of my favorite lines.

Actually, sometimes it's so great being where people aren't. It's soothing. You can listen to the sounds of nature, and forget about real life for a while. The open space is so freeing, and you don’t feel closed in or claustrophobic. You have personal space.

If people really stopped and thought for a minute, ”they'd understand why God made those fly over states.” Some states are largely agricultural with many small towns, and some are mostly urban cities with high populations. The United States would be a terrible place to live if every state was the equivalent of New York and California in terms of population and tourism.

"like a watercolor painted sky" and “feel that freedom of your face, breathe in all that open space" are the lyrical poetry parts of the song, and should be treasured, like the various places in these so-called fly over states.

Many of the most beautiful places in the country are those that contain merely natural beauty, not those that are most popular in terms of tourism. In fact, I think more popular places almost lose their beauty because not everyone knows how to properly care for nature. The phrase "leave it better than when you got there" applies here.

Aldean’s song suggests that “You might even wanna plant your stakes in those fly over states.”

Maybe if you’re open minded enough, you’ll end up in one of these states.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
