The Good And The Not So Good Of Syllabus Week

“It’s syllabus week,” they said.

The Good And The Not So Good Of Syllabus Week

As the good-byes begin to family and old friends, the anticipation as winter break comes to an end is at an all-time high. Coming back to college is upon us. The first week back to campus has an inspiring vibe in the air, fueling everyone with life as the new semester begins. Reuniting with friends (hopefully not all tanner than you), starting new classes and hanging out until 3 a.m. with no consequences; what could go wrong?

Pro: It’s not real class, it’s an extension of break.

Most likely you won’t have any quizzes or tests given out on the first week of class, so it doesn’t count, right?

This week is purposely supposed to be easy or else it will be too overwhelming for us, right?

That means no homework for a week, right?

Con: Wrong, you will still get assignments (and a lot of them).

T.A.: “Open the book to chapter 1. Also a reminder the first assignment is due tomorrow.”

Me: “What book should I purchase again…?”

Pro: New year, new semester, new you.

It’s a fresh new start! It has been a month since you have seen your friends (or if you are like me, stepped out in public). New relationships start to form; study buddies, romantic ones and lasting friends.

Con: Your ex-anything is in your class.

This has yet to happen to me (fingers crossed it never does), yet I can see how it is straight up awkward walking into discussion and seeing them. Whether it was a 6 month relationship or a one-time hookup, the worst is not that he or she has seen you butt-naked. The worst is how you left off.

*Don’t make eye-contact, don’t make eye-contact…*

“Hello, ahh yeah um so how have you been?”

“Why did you cheat on me with him?”

“Ahh yeah um so how have you been?”

Pro: I’m not a poor college student anymore, thank you Christmas.

Either you worked a lot over break or you were lucky enough to get the jackpot from relative’s presents, your bank account is now in the positives. You can’t wait to live lavishly in college and impress friends by buying the first couple rounds.

Con: Money will not buy happiness.

It is always fun and games until you wake up in the morning and realize what you were cuddling with. A hottie from the party pizza box (for the sixth time). There goes my dignity and my bank account, again.

It can be an exciting and nervous time for many students. College is a once in a life opportunity with syllabus week setting the stage for the rest of the semester; it is up to you to make the best of it. Cheers to the best four years of our life and a young Leo!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
