Much like the beginning of a zombie apocalypse film, I only knew one or two people who played Pokémon Go. This was barely two weeks ago, and it has since spread like wildfire. I can’t go anywhere with out hearing someone talk about it, or seeing someone run off in a weird direction staring at their phones as if they’re about to take a picture. Growing up, I never watched Pokémon, so I have very little desire to join in on the fun. However, I simultaneously find this phenomena annoying and entertaining. Here’s a quick rundown of the good and the bad from my outsider perspective:
Bad:
I know, I know! I’m starting off with the negative, but I cannot emphasize this enough. I cannot even fathom why people think it’s actually okay to play this game at museums, memorials, and cemeteries. It’s so disrespectful. If you have to question yourself, then there is a good chance you should NOT being going there.
Good:
People seem to be going to new places! The National Park Service actually issued a PSA about what Pokémon players can expect at the park. This is almost unprecedented for a gaming app. As much as I loved Angry Birds back in the day, it never made me want to go out and explore.
Bad: It’s as if people weren’t distracted enough. I get that you want to take pictures of a random cartoon character, but y'all... Doing scary things, like walking alone at night, might make for a fun story, but please be safe! I don’t think any game is worth your life. Whatever you do, please do not Pokémon Go and drive. I probably sound like your mom, but you'll thank me later when you're alive.
Good: Some of the tweets/Facebook posts have been surprisingly hilarious. I always appreciate a laugh. This one is a gem.
Bad: Maybe I don’t understand, because I refuse to play, but why do people feel the need to play at such odd hours?? Sleep is life.
Good: I love seeing people have a sense of fun as a result of the game. It doesn’t matter if they’re 7 or 47, they’re simply playing to have a good time! They seem to love the thrill of the chase. This is definitely going to lead to more adventures in the long run.
Maybe one day, I’ll look back and wish I joined in on the fun. Maybe I’ll be proud of myself for using my time wisely. Who knows? All I know is that this app is definitely having it’s pop culture moment. So go catch all of them! (Did I say it right??)
