To The Girls Who Will Live In My Dorm Next Year,
Freshman year was different, to say the least. There’s a lot of adjustments to be made. You no longer have your own room, but luckily this room is big enough you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Try to keep it as open as possible - that helped a lot. If you’re used to air conditioning, good luck because there’s none of that. (This was especially hard for me - it gets HOT at night!)Decorate everything to how YOU want it to be - not whatever everyone else is doing. The room isn’t a luxurious hotel room suite, but it’s what you make it.
For me, the people who lived on my floor are some that I can see as life long friends. When you all are forced to see eachother everyday, whether it be in the bathroom, in the floor’s common room or waiting for the elevator you will remember all of their faces and most likely come to know a few. Don’t be afraid to talk to them - you’re all feeling the same way.
However, it’s impossible you’re going to like everyone you come into contact with on the floor. There will be those people who keep you up all night while they scream at their boyfriend/girlfriend (especially when you have practice at 5am). Or maybe you have a neighbor who repeatedly drops bowling balls over and over for no apparent reason. The fire alarms were the worst. You’ll be in bed just about to fall asleep when the fire alarm starts blaring as if it was right next to your ear. (Make sure you cover your ears - there will be a lot of those) Grab a coat (if it’s cold) and shoes as quickly as you can to escape the noise, but usually it’s only because someone forgot how to make easy mac. Yes, easy mac.
You’re going to make so many memories. I loved that we had a common room (living room) in our suite. Decorate the room early! We couldn’t figure out how we wanted to decorate our living room until it was too late in the year to really enjoy it. The common room is a great place for the four of you to have a place to hangout besides your bedrooms. There will be nights you’ll stay up laughing and yelling things at passersby on the street below, or when you’ll throw parties with too many people for the small space and the RA’s will come to your room telling you to shut it down. (Don’t, of course.) Oh and always, always lock your door. Trust me, the one time you don’t lock it at night a drunk girl will come stumbling into your room thinking it’s hers and go through all your stuff.
Make time for YOU. When you live with three others, everyone has their own wants and needs. Sometimes you’ll need to study and they might want to hangout and stay up late but do what YOU need to do first. Get stuff done to make time for all the extra things.
Most importantly, have fun and love your roommates. I couldn’t have found a better group of girls to room with for two whole semesters and I hope that you have suitemates that you love too.
Sincerely, Frisch 512
