The Girl Who Gave Writing A Second Chance

Dear readers,

Back in August, I made the decision to pursue something that I have dreaded for a very long time. I decided to become a writer. Now, for those who have read my previous work, you have heard bits and pieces of my story. However, many of you have not, and those who have heard parts of my journey, you may not have seen (or read) the whole picture. And so, for my new and faithful readers, enjoy.

At the end of my summer, before starting my first year as a college student, I was approached by a very dedicated Odyssey writer who asked if I would be interested in becoming a content creator. Of course, my initial response was somewhere along the lines of "No way, I hate writing." But after I took some time to think about it, I decided, why not! Since my decision, I have had the opportunity to write many articles on various topics over the last few months. I have improved my writing (at least, I like to think so!). I have learned a great deal, and I have come to respect writing for its many dynamic qualities.

Writing was never an easy task for me growing up. At a young age, I began learning a second language and had a hard time writing in both English and Spanish. Due to this obstacle and many others, I gave up and decided that I wouldn't write unless I needed to. Even so, I spent the majority of my senior writing. Through my college writing class, and applying for universities and scholarships, I spent most waking hours typing away on my computer. It became my new found "hobby" whether I liked it or not. So I guess you could say, that somewhere between graduation and the beginning of my fall term, I decided that writing was in fact not the worst thing. In fact, I have learned that writing is so much more than what I thought: meaningless words on a piece of paper.

Writing is the very essence of our thoughts and soul.

Writing has the power to move people to believe and act on their beliefs.

Writing is a way to teach and to learn.

Writing becomes an escape from the real world.

Writing is a way to express feelings that are hard to share.

Writing creates art out of the simplest of words.

Writing influences world perspectives and attitudes.

Becoming a content writer has brought many challenges, but all of which I have overcome with hard work, a positive outlook, and much-needed encouragement. Writing is just one of the many activities that I have pursued more recently in hopes to strengthen my abilities and expand my interest. It has been an uphill battle since the beginning, but I am glad that I made the decision to try something new. Sometimes in life, change is needed. Writing is that change that I sought out, and it has been a worthwhile adventure.

For those reading this, I urge you to do the same. To try something that you've never done before or strongly dislike, and to make the most out of the experience. Try writing, even consider creating content for the Odyssey. Whatever you decided, do so with a clear mind, and ready to learn attitude.

From,

The girl who gave writing a second chance.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
