A Letter To The Girl I Will Be Next Year

Every single day I wish I could go back and change so many things about this past year. If I could, maybe I would be a better person, maybe I wouldn't be second guessing everything in my life, maybe I'd have better self-confidence, but I can't. So, instead of writing a letter to my past self, here's a letter to my future self and all the thing I hope for you to accomplish.

A year seems like a long time, and it is. But once you get to the end of that year, you'll look back and see how fast it flew by. It seems like just yesterday I was moving into my freshman dorm so excited about the new opportunities surrounding me. Now I'm 3/4 of the way through my sophomore year and so much has changed.

Dear future self,

here's everything I hope for you as this next year goes by.

Stop looking down on yourself. Don't let the opinions of those around you affect your own values and outlook on life. You are beautiful and deserve to feel that way.

Forgive, but don't forget. One thing I admire about my past self and hope to not lose in my future self is our willingness to forgive so easily. When you don't forgive someone, you're only hurting yourself but holding on to that anger. But forgiving someone doesn't always mean they'll change. Be careful who you let back into your life.

Be a little less crazy. Be secure in yourself and don't go doing things to make yourself feel and look better. Be nice to people and the world will return the favor.

Stop second guessing yourself. You are going to do great in whatever you decide to pursue in life. Times may get hard but you are a fighter and you will keep on going. Continue to fight for the things you want and don't give up.

But most of all, love yourself. Because if you don't, who will?

When I was a child, I used to look forward to Memorial Day Weekend from the time I returned to school after Christmas vacation. It was the yearly benchmark announcing the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacation. It meant I was one step closer to regattas, swim meets and tennis matches.

I remember how exciting summer was when I was a kid. I would just be eagerly waiting for school to end so that I could fly to some exotic location with my family for the summer. Or hang out with my friends every day. Or just lay around in bed or read, paint, draw, basically do whatever.
