Everyone has been talking about Netflix's newest original series "Stranger Things" and how it's a must-see, but less attention has been given to another recent Netflix original series, "The Get Down." This needs to change. Not to say that "Stranger Things" shouldn't be watched or that it's not a good show, but "The Get Down" certainly deserves more attention in its own right.
The series revolves around Ezekiel Figuero (Justice Smith), a teenager growing up in the Bronx during the 1970s and trying to become part of the underground hip-hop scene after he befriends wannabe DJ and legendary graffiti artist Shaolin Fantastic. His crew also includes the Kipling Brothers, Ra-Ra (Skylan Brooks), Boo-Boo (Tremaine Brown), and Dizzee (Jaden Smith). While he and his friends are trying to be a part of up-and-coming hip-hop, Ezekiel's romantic interest, Mylene (Herizen Guardiola) the daughter of a church pastor, is determined to become a disco star. That cast is absolutely fantastic, and while the number of shows featuring a POC as the protagonist are increasing, it's always nice to see more, especially one with a protagonist as lovable as Ezekiel.
This premise could have easily fallen for any number of overwrought cliches, but the performances truly bring new life into the setup, and the characters are hard not to fall in love with. Also, the setting, New York City during the late 70's, is practically a character all its own. (Sidenote, being a huge fan of Mad Men, a series that takes place in New York City during the 60's, one really gets a sense of the disparity between white and black America, and just how much things had change within just two decades). I wouldn't say this show is a period piece, despite the fact that the setting is so central to the series. It's really a coming-of-age story, with friendship, romance, family, and musicat the heart of it all. Which is why I cannot wait for the second season.
And, I just want to take the time to mention one of my favorite performances in this show, Jayden Smith as Dizzee. Honestly, I've never really been a fan of Jaden Smith's previous work, but I think he was born to play Dizzee. Here are a few of fan favorite moments:
