Dance has been an important part of my life, especially these past five years. When it comes to dance, words are not necessary. Every movement has its own subtle meaning. It’s not just a way to exercise and stay agile, but a way to communicate with people on a different level.
It’s easy to dance with no soul and to simply know the movements and memorize the timing. However, it’s a whole different experience when a dancer is able to show feeling through movements and their expressions.
My ballet instructors are always saying things along the lines of “this is where you should actually dance, don’t just do the steps.” They also help spark the imagination to evoke the emotion by using imagery such as pretending the ground is hot, so the steps need to be sharp and fast. Other times we imagine we’re royally with a large crowd that needs to stay balanced, and a large ball gown that flows with each sweeping movement.
Dance isn’t just about dancing, it’s about an experience. It’s a conversation between the dancer(s) and the audience. There’s a story being woven on stage and that makes for a beautiful connection.
