Everybody has to read some Shakespeare at one time or another in their life. It's definitely not the easiest literature in the world to understand, with all the "thee's" and "thou's" and weird metaphors. Still, the stories are amazing, and you need to know it for your class, or just to enjoy it! If you're finding yourself struggling with traditional Shakespeare, check out these modernized adaptions of the classic plays! Same plot, modern language, and relatable characters.
1. Ten Things I Hate About You
This is an adaption of "Taming of the Shrew", but a lot less sexist, and a lot more Heath Ledger.
2. O
An adaption of "Othello," this take place in a high school. It also stars Julia Stiles, who flourishes in high school Shakespeare adaptions.
3. West Side Story
This classic is an adaption of "Romeo and Juliet," but with singing and threatening rhythmic snapping.
4. She's the Man
This iconic Amanda Bynes rom-com is an adaption of "Twelfth Night." If you haven't watched it yet, you're missing out on some important life lessons.
5. Romeo + Juliet
Okay, so this one is a little trickier. It does keep all the original language from the play, but it is set in the 1980s. The old language might still be difficult, but young Leo Dicaprio makes it all better.
