Are you like me where your friends seem to be posting really cute engagement photos, or tweeting about some magical dinner date? I am here to tell you that you are not alone, and that it's really OK to be single!
The topic of being single can carry seemingly negative connotations, however this article is here to tell you differently. This article is going to cover the opportunities and advantages that being single offers, namely the blessings of flexibility in your personal life.
You are generally free to take opportunities when they are offered to you!
The four years of being an undergraduate student and the first few years following university, in other words your early 20s, are when the average person has the most amount of flexibility in their personal life. The internet is full of blog postings about people deciding to travel in Australia or Europe for year, or about someone taking that awesome year long internship in some remote part of China.
One of the most common factors in all of those stories, the people who were able to just take off and engage in those adventures were single. They had the flexibility to just worry about their own immediate person and take off for a while. Not having a significant other creates a certain level of general maneuverability in regards to life decisions, that usually is not featured in many fledgling life-long romances.
Life is not quite as expensive, "Wait I can actually afford to go and do that!?"
Being in a relationship can be expensive, and I'm not just talking about watching your bank account number rapidly approach $0. Cute couple adventures not only can become expensive for the wallet. Those memorable outings can take a toll in the areas of time, emotions and personal motivation.
The average person has only so much of themselves that they can give to other people, and a significant other naturally demands more resources be devoted to them. If you are single, not only can you afford to pay for dinner and movie Friday night with all of the buds. You can actually afford to spend time with them afterwards and engage in awesome late night philosophical life discussions (which usually involve someone complaining about how they're still single).
Next time that annoying engagement post with a million photos pops up, just remember to smile and congratulate the happy couple. Meanwhile be free to think to yourself, "Haha! Enjoy your week long honeymoon in Vegas! I'll be sure to send you a postcard from Sydney!"
