The Fitness Struggle

Dear Abs, I may not see you, but I know your somewhere under there.

“I’ll start tomorrow.”

“I’m too tired.”

“I have too much to do.”

We’ve all used these one-liners before. It’s easier to say we’re going to workout everyday than to actually do it.

The ever-so-dreadful bikini season is approaching and I know what you’re thinking, “not again.” But before you start getting down on yourself, I want you to know, you’re not alone. We all struggle to find body-positivity. Especially, when all we see when we look around are people that we can so easily compare ourselves too.

You search desperately for motivation. Maybe look online at photos of your ideal body goal, or pictures of exotic salads with avocado and chicken and maybe even get a friend to workout with you. But, what I’ve discovered is that these tactics only work for a short period of time. For me, the motivation will only get you started. It’s habit that keeps you on a routine and the results that turn it into an addiction and a lifestyle.

I am proud to say that I am an avid gym-goer. I have the days when I absolutely cannot stand the thought of being in that sweat-filled place and then the days where all I crave is cardio and squats. But regardless, I always make sure to keep in mind that every workout is a good workout. Gym memberships can be expensive, but the feel-good attitude you get after a long and hard hour in the gym is priceless. The best motivator for me has been seeing the results that come from my dedication. Even if I spend just thirty minutes a day in the gym it’s worth it because exercise is so incredibly important for our bodies. Results take time. So, don’t give up.

I drink this smoothie whenever I’m feeling bloated or in the mornings when I’m in desperate need of some energy. The only thing you can taste is the pineapple and lime. It's a cool and refreshing drink that takes you on a tropical escape. If you’re not a fan of pineapple (I know some people are not) you can substitute it for apple or kiwi. Pineapple not only boosts your immune system but it has tons of fiber so it helps improve digestion. Cucumber aids weight loss and flushes toxins from your body while improving the overall appearance of your skin. DEE-LICIOUS!

Ingredients:

1 cup Kale

½ Lime (Juice)

1 cup Pineapple

½ cup Cucumber

Let’s be honest for a second, getting fit is really hard. I have a love-hate relationship with gyms. I love what they do for me but I hate the thought of them. The hardest thing about working out is getting to the gym. Which is funny, cause that’s actually the easy part. It’s important to remember that healthy looks different on everyone. The best thing about us is that we’re all unique and that speaks for our body types as well. The only scale you should focus on is the one in your head that measures how happy you feel in your skin. Being fit and eating healthy is a struggle. Make small lifestyle adjustments to help kickstart your healthy body. Don't wait till tomorrow, start today because you won’t get the booty you want by sitting on it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
