I have never resonated so much with a quote before. This quote, which I had found on a friend's Instagram a few years back, hit me like a ton of bricks. It had me questioning and agreeing all at the same time. For the past couple of years (2012 to be exact), we as human beings have worried about when the world will come to an end. Of course, trying to determine when such an event would occur is anything far from positive and contradicts the very point of living; enjoying life like every day is your last. What I cannot get over though, is that we're so concerned with when the world is ending, when life will cease to exist on this massive, floating, orb we call a planet, that we're missing the real picture.
From all of the recent terror attacks, school shootings, police vs. citizen beatings, etc., the list goes on, we're overlooking a massively important point. What I've come to realize is that we are the reason the world is going to end, not because some old Mayan calendar tells us so, or because a comet is going to project itself smack dab into the center of planet earth; we are the issue. The hate crimes, the mass bombings, the horrible drunk driving incidents....when are we going to wake up and take matters into our own hands with the blame resting on human kind's shoulders? The people who commit these crimes are the end of the world, they're dooming us all, bringing us closer and closer each day to erasing the human race.
When will all this madness end? When will everyone finally realize that committing such crimes aren't proving a point, except for the point that human kind is self destructing? If these many crimes have existed within the past year or so, what does that mean for the future? No, life is not all rainbows and sunshine, and no one expects it to be, but "where is the love?" as an old childhood song by the Black Eyed Peas once questioned? I can't bear to see another horrible drunk driving incident, school shooting, high suicide rates, or terror attacks occur anymore. What are we doing wrong as a society, and how can this change?
The key is reflection; people need to begin reflecting on the choices they make and the twisted-ness needs to stop, which I unfortunately do not have an answer for. If we don't do something soon, our lives are going to come and go in a flash, and the entire human race that isn't participating in these horrid acts are going to be the victims of these harmful events.
I don't mean to go on and on about how horrible the world is, but when will people take responsibility for dooming everyone else around them? If we don't change something soon, it'll never be fixed, because the "end of the world" may just be brought upon by its inhabitants, and not by an old ancient myth or prediction.
