Church, where is your armor?

When I heard the news that Donald Trump will be our nation’s 45th president, I was terrified. After months of listening to what this man has said—the racist, sexist, and ignorant comments—I was shocked to find out he had won the election.

I was fearful for the violence that could break out. I was fearful for being a Hispanic woman and the discrimination that could escalate because of his victory, but I had the most fear about the division this country is experiencing through this whole process.

If we look around what do we see? We see division, separation and hatred; we have lost the context of what it means to be united.

I am still in shock that he won the candidacy; however, my attitude changed when I turned to God for guidance.

Psalm 27: 13-14

“I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord” (NIV).

My attitude changed from fear to courage. It changed because despite the division that is happening, God is still good!

One of my favorite quotes is from the book Incantation by Alice Hoffman. This book is about a Spanish Jewish family being persecuted for their faith, and how no matter what happens the fundamental part of who a human is cannot be destroyed if you stand firm in faith, “I am someone I never would have imagined. A secret. A dream. I am this, body and soul. Burn me. Drown me. Tell me lies. I will still be who I am.”

We—as the body of Christ—need to remember who we are and who God is. We need to humble ourselves and pray. Pray for Trump, and that God intersects his heart and softens it. We need to pray that the warriors of Christ will rise up and seek justice and truth.

Church, where is your armor? This is the time the church and body of Christ needs to rise up. Republican or Democrat, we need to rise up in love and speak the truth that God is good and reigns! Unity is how change is made.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
