Today we’re going to talk about the crown jewel of makeup: eyeliner. Not the under-eye-eyeliner, which can be done by pretty much anyone, I am talking about the flawless "cat eye". When done correctly, it brings out every woman’s inner sassy, classy, and gives her butt-kicking confidence to take on the world! I started experimenting when I was sixteen, and to be absolutely honest, it took me a long while to get to where I am now. In fact, mastering the "cat-eye" is an art and it should be included on a job resume because trust me; it’s hard. There are GOOD eyeliner days, and there are BAD eyeliner days, and when I say bad eyeliner days; I mean so bad that you look like you got into a fist fight with a raccoon or something like that.
Like I said earlier, it’s taken me four years to learn the ways of the eyeliner, which automatically given the experience should automatically make me an expert... not really but still. During the learning days, I learned about the 'do’s and don’ts of eyeliner', and to those out there who are struggling with trying to get the perfect cat eye, or who are just getting started on eyeliner, these tips could help! Or maybe they won’t… results may vary, I will not be held responsible.
DO: Start With Whatever Makes You Comfortable.
When asking a bunch of people on what type of eyeliner is best for the beginner level, I got mixed answers ranging from every single type of eyeliner out there. The one thing to realize is that no matter what the beauty blogs or make up tutorials tell you; just do whatever you believe is the easiest for you! I personally started with the liquid and worked my way up to felt, while some girls I talked to told me they started with gel or pencil. Every eye makeup is unique, just like the individual who is wearing it!
DO: Keep Q-Tips and Makeup Remover on You.
For first timers this is a must, since your first time using eyeliner will be messy and there will be many mistakes. Most Q-Tips and makeup removers come cheap at every drug store, and they come in handy in the process of shaping the wing of your eyeliner. Even when you’re an experienced eyeliner applier you still use an average of 2-4 Q-Tips, and they never fail in making the wing sharp and on point.
DON'T: Start With Expensive Eyeliners.
When you get your license, do you start by driving a high class sports car?? Of course not! And the same thing goes for eyeliner! Start with cheap brands of eyeliner before moving to the ones you see on the shelves of Sephora, because you will have absolutely no idea what you are doing and what you are looking for. Another way I see it is that practicing application of eyeliner can compare to practicing a sport or playing a video game: when you practice, and get better (or ‘level up’) you would be able to eventually ‘unlock’ the more expensive eyeliners. And even when it does happen, you will always go back to the cheap stuff because of funds, but at least it gets the job done.
DON'T: 'Raccoon it'
Now there is a very fine line between a sassy kitten tail and a full on tiger stripe, PLEASE try your best to avoid turning your daily makeup into a carnival face paint. It may seem difficult since at some point in everyone's life, they went through the heavy eyeliner phase (literally the dark ages) but you soon see that very few people can pull off heavy eyeliner, and the best thing to do is to tone it down if it does not work out for you. This is also what the Q-Tips and makeup remover come in handy for (who knew, huh?).
DON'T: Give up!
If all else fails, don’t quit! Not every day could be a good eyeliner day; and sometimes it takes a significant amount of bad eyeliner days to one day finally get the perfect wing you’ve been looking for! Also as well as understanding that the cat eye might not be for everyone, you can still rock everyone’s socks off with whatever you got and show everyone who is boss!
