In a world where opinions are everywhere -- Facebook walls, newspapers, blogs, news reports and classrooms --the door to prejudice tends to open and run ferociously aflame. Instead of using our passions to make constructive changes in the world, we tend to spew hatred to express our thoughts and opinions. Every person should aim to use their passions for good, omit their spiteful tendencies and strive to have a positive influence on the world.
If you are someone who tends to speak of the following topics in a hateful or negative way, here are some ideas of how you can start to enact a positive development.
Abortion
Don't: Discourage confused women from exploring their pregnancy options. Don't protest outside of abortion clinics or speak ill of those who choose to abort their fetuses. Abortion is legal and spewing hateful words will not change the fact that some women choose this option.
Do: Volunteer at clinics that help struggling mothers. These women have chosen to bring their babies into the world despite their unfavorable circumstances. They need all the help they can get.
Refugee crisis
Don't: Violently protest the potential of bringing in struggling refugees; your empty opinion won't change the fact that the world is in crisis.
Do: Donate money or time to the relief efforts of countries that have agreed to take in refugees. You can aid in the international crisis while keeping refugees safe in another place. Win-win.
Welfare
Don't: Degrade human beings as merely lazy and "system-sucking" entities. People deserve respect.
Do: Volunteer with programs that put people back to work. Donate professional clothing to drives that specialize in giving interview attire to those trying to get jobs. If you know anyone who is unemployed and on welfare, help them update their resume.
Religion
Don't: Tell people that their beliefs are wrong or incorrect. Spirituality is extremely important to some people and dominates their every thought and action. Insulting someone's religion insults their entire way of life.
Do: Practice your own beliefs wholeheartedly. At the heart of every religion and practice there is a basis of love and acceptance; learn to adapt to that policy.
Everyone has their own opinions about every topic under the sun. There are things every person can do to positively influence their life and others without being offensive and without degrading other human beings. Don't simply speak ill of things you don't agree with -- be the change you want to see.
