September 16th, 2016, Malcolm James McCormick, also known as Mac Miller, released his fourth album titled: The Divine Feminine. After just a year since his last album, GO:OD AM, the American rap artist has returned once again to give the world something else to get their ears into. Before The Devine Feminine’s launch, a prediction on what Miller might drop after his last album was anyone’s best guess. Miller had already impressed critics and fans with the translucency found on his last album, which discussed his past and present struggles with sobriety and depression. Critics claimed that his work was the strongest to date and additionally agreed that Miller had finally graduated from his fratty-party music phase of the past and proved his longevity as an artist. Now, with a bright future ahead, Mac Miller continues to illuminate his path ahead with his intriguing new album.
Way back when, K.I.D.S. brought Mac Miller on the map with songs like “Knock Knock", "Nikes on My Feet,” and “Don’t Mind If I Do”, and pulled listeners in with the hype and go of his songs. Today things are little different for the rap vet. Not to say that parties, girls and drugs are not part of his life anymore, Miller has just found a new way of doing him. “A rebirth,” claims the rapper. The Divine Feminine reflects Millers experience with women of the past as well as his current relationship with singer and actress, Ariana Grande. A ten track album, featuring artists including Kendrick Lamar, Ty Dolla Sign, Anderson .Paak, and Ariana Grande herself, the list is not the typical colorful, energetic or the adventurous Mac Miller previously heard on the last release, it still isn't to be tossed to the curb by any means. Though some at first may be deterred to listen since the the entire album is composed of "love songs", I would suggest to look past the little things and understand that Miller truly is on a high right now and is producing some of the best music he has produced in a long time. Plus, its always does some good to check out music or a type of music you haven't heard before to get a little diversity. Throughout the album, Miller is heard exploring new genres, in that he has begun using his voice much more for singing in addition to his rapping. The album as a whole is a lot slower, melodic and jazzier than his other works, but it flows in its own way. Smooth beats and soft melodies create an entirely new atmosphere for the rapper that the public have not heard a lot of before making The Divine Feminine a very different Mac Miller experience.
I can see how some people might think that he should just stick to bars but, as mentioned before, he’s killing it right now and you don’t want to miss what he has for the people. No matter the artist, underground or mainstream, it's always worth giving that shot to those who put themselves out there and try to do something different from the rest, because you never know… that shit just might hit. Go cop the album, expand your horizons and check out some new music you’ve never heard. My favorite tracks off the record right now are “Dang!, My Favorite Part,” and “We”. If there are any questions or comments about this weeks article make sure to act and reach out.
Before I rap it up, what are your opinions of the album or on Mac himself? What do you like to hear from this artist or similar artists? I'm genuinely interested. Thanks for checking out the article out, my people. As always, take it easy.
