You hear Greek life and everyone automatically thinks drinking, partying, hazing, houses, tailgates, and any other thing TSM/TFM-affiliated. At FGCU, Greek life is very different from any other university and it has to do a lot with the amount of students that attend our university.
A few things that differentiate Greek life at FGCU and other universities are:
1. No top tiers.
All our organizations are great in different ways and we have a very small number of organizations to pick from to even form a top tier.
2. No rivalries in the Panhellenic community.
Of course we are competitive, but not in a way that we let one of our Panhellenic organizations feel as if they were affected. We all have friends in other organizations and support one another.
3. No housing.
We don't have Greek housing, which stinks, but at the same time, our dues are a lot more affordable and we find other ways to spend time together as a chapter, rather than just in a house.
4. Hazing is very uncommon in our Panhellenic community
And if there was an hazing incident going on, someone is bound to find out. Our school is so small the chapter could potentially be shut down in the next 24 hours.
5. All Greek organizations support each other.
The Greek community as a whole stands together. There are so many people on campus that participate in Greek life, which makes it easier for people to want to be involved in philanthropy events and all of our events that we hold. We know that without supporting each other's events, we couldn't succeed.
6. Dues are more affordable.
At bigger universities, dues are very expensive because of housing and the amount of students who are actively involved. At FGCU, it is more affordable!
7. Social media isn't a big deal.
At FGCU, our Greek life is heavily monitored. Our social media are not allowed to show any signs of underage drinking or anything along those lines. At bigger schools, they really just don't care. They have more things to worry about. I personally think it is better that our social media are monitored. It's not just for our organization that our social media should be clean; it's for our future. It could potentially ruin a future employment.
