Allow me to tell you a story about how the other day, as a complete accident, I found the coolest music video I have ever seen. At first, I wanted to keep it as my little secret, but that's not what it was made for. It's honestly too great not to share.
The song is called "Mountain At My Gates" by Foals, an English indie band that will do a slight U.S. tour after appearing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Their song captivated me on the radio, and thanks to Siri, I have a new addition to every Spotify playlist I've made.
When I went to look up the song, I was doing my homework, phone on my lap. I searched for the video just so I could listen to the song. A minute or so went by before I curiously glanced down to see what the music video looked like, confused to see only a brick ground and feet at the edge of the screen.
Then I picked it up, and well, I don't want to ruin the surprise, so you'll just have to see it to believe it. (If you have the YouTube app on your phone, watch it on there. It won't work on a mobile browser. If you're watching on a computer, use Google Chrome, though it's much better on the YouTube app.)
That's right. This music video is virtual reality. On the computer, a small keypad with arrows appears and lets you click around to control where your view goes. On the YouTube app, your view goes to however you tilt your phone.
This was made possible by being filmed with a GoPro Spherical, which captures the surroundings in 360 degrees. It provides the viewer with an interactive experience while watching the video.
I was shocked that this music video was released eight months ago and had only six million views. Not only is the song great, but the video is really like no other. It was produced by a man by the name of Nabil Elderkin, who is most known for producing videos for Kanye West and Frank Ocean. It seems as though he's really outdone himself this time.
It definitely made me become a fan of Foals.
If you're as impressed by this video as I am, and you're captivated into the whole GoPro Spherical thing, you might also enjoy this surfing video shot the same way.
You're welcome.
