The Powerful Bond Between Music And The Soul

Music allows us to express ourselves to each other in a very different way.

Ever since I was young I have had a strong interest in music, and all different kinds of it. Singing, playing instruments, composition- it all caught my attention more than anything else. When I was really little I remember walking into my uncle's house and every time without fail he would be blasting the Beatles on his record player. Me being a very curious little kid would rummage through his records asking him to put on different records so that I could listen. I was heavily influenced by music when I was little. I was constantly surrounded by it and surrounded myself with it by discovering new genres of music, joining the choir and found my passion for singing, and attempting to play instruments (totally failing at doing so, but hey at least I tried.)

For me, and a lot of people, we connect through music. Whenever I'm introduced to someone new, I'm always curious what kinds of music they listen to in their spare time, because it can say a lot about a person. It reveals different sides of a person that you don't pick up on by just talking to them. Lyrics and melodies can convey so much and capture the emotional state of a person in the best way possible. When I have a similar taste in music with a person, you can't shut me up. I'll be asking them about concerts they've been to, if they have heard a band's new album, and all sorts of questions that I'm genuinely curious and interested about.

How we interpret music opens up a lot of windows into how we think, and also our personality. It gives a sense of new perspectives and can uplift our souls. A person's favorite songs can be connected to emotional experiences they have went through or really exciting times in their life. The speed and rhythm of a song can make us feel some sort of way. John Mayer makes me want to stay in on a rainy day and drink a warm cup of tea, where a band like ODESZA makes me wanna dance my heart out to the heavy beats.

Music literally brings people together. Next time you're a concert or a music festival, notice how you share the same energy as the crowd around you. The way everyone's bodies move, the way the we share things about ourselves through the sounds we are hearing. Music is a magical way for humans to connect with each other, and it's personally my favorite way to connect with anyone.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
