I feel like one of the biggest struggles of being a girl in college is finding balance. Everyone tells you that you need to be well rested, but also that you should take every opportunity because college is so short. I relate to this on so many levels. Between sorority life, a job, academics, and wanting to enjoy my four years, I constantly find myself feeling overwhelmed.
Why does wanting to have it all have to be so hard?
I feel there is no good way to answer this. It just is. Am I the only one out here who feels like I am always spreading myself too thin? Why can't I say no? I feel like there is this constant pressure to always push yourself and strive for more. Don't get me wrong, I feel like this is a very important mentality to have, not only in college but in life.
However, as a young woman, I feel there is not only the expectation to do well academically but to also be physically fit and eat healthy too. We're expected to have killer abs and to eat clean 24/7. I love Instagram and Pinterest, but I also need to be realistic.
I do truly love working out. It is the main way that I get rid of stress, but right now I just can't dedicate two hours at the gym every day. And I would love to say that I wake up and have a green smoothie every morning, but most mornings I'm lucky if I have a cup of coffee.
Sometimes you just want to wake up, throw on a pair of leggings, and drag yourself to Starbucks. Hopefully in time for your early morning class. (I really need to stop taking them. They are evil.)
Sometimes you feel inspired and pick out a cute outfit. Maybe you do your full face of makeup and even your hair. And that's perfectly okay. At the end of the day, your happiness and well-being are what is most important; it's about what makes you feel good.
You need time for you. Crazy right?
In the midst of everything going on in your life, it is so important to make time for yourself. When creating a balanced life, I feel like self-love is what's most forgotten. It's not just academics, fitness, friends, and involvement. It is also self-care. Everyone has different needs, and you need to be aware of your own. I try my best to carve out a little time every week to do something just for myself.
Whether it is getting frozen custard with a friend (If you go to High Point, try Andy's. It will change your life.), or doing a face mask and getting a manicure. College is stressful enough and your well-being is so important. Without it, you won't accomplish all the amazing things you set yourself for.
Achieving a balanced life is not easy. I have learned that college is a series of things popping up when you least expect them. And to a girl with a busy schedule, this is a nightmare! But never fear. You are strong enough, and you will make it through everything.
Just try to focus on one day at a time and remember to only take on what you can handle!
